Community service is part of programming and a responsibility for each youth. Community service at MVJRC means projects outside the scope of the youths’ daily responsibilities to maintain and care for all spaces within the facility. Some of the projects include work in local parks, carpet cleaning and grounds keeping for the Juvenile Court.
Two recent community service initiatives are “Go Green” and "Garden Club." MVJRC is partnering with the Greene County Department of Environmental Services and the Juvenile Court to develop and manage "Go Green" a comprehensive recycling program for the entire Juvenile Justice Complex, that will aid in services provided by the Recycling Center.
The “Garden Club” will be planting a vegetable garden. This will be developed and worked by staff and youth with the assistance of other county agencies, business and private donors, and volunteers. The produce will be donated to the Xenia Community Food Pantry. This program will include an educational component; a master gardener associated with the OSU Greene County Extension Office will be will be teaching a home gardening course as part of our life skills curriculum.
Some youth are able to earn credit towards court ordered restitution and community service obligations for services performed while in placement.
